Purple – The Royal “We” of Branding

The Color of Royalty, Wealth, & Sophistication

In honor of February’s beautiful birthstone, Amethyst, let’s look at how purple is used in marketing and branding. Think of purple as the Royal “We” of marketing…

The color purple is often linked to luxury, mystery, creativity, and even the ethereal, representing a sense of spirituality. It also carries a long-standing association with royalty. So, how does this translate into the look and feel of your brand? First, you must determine whether purple is the right choice for what you want to convey.

The Color IS The Brand

Heck, probably the best example is the Purple brand of mattresses. It’s purple in your face. Everything in their marketing is purple, except the mattresses themselves, although the mattresses are what make the color purple work so well. Almost all the bases are covered… the feeling of luxury and royalty, creativity and wisdom (we’ve all gotten lost in thought laying on a good comfy mattress) and even the calm of spirituality.

Power Couple Color Combo

FedEx uses both purple and orange in their logo, which is really fascinating because the red and blue in purple combine the energy of red with the power of blue. Meanwhile, the orange portion combines red with the positivity of yellow, emphasizing the enthusiasm of the color orange itself.

Roku

Purple-a-Plenty

If you have Roku, you’ve probably noticed not only the purple logo, but the use of purple on their sleep screen in Roku City. This can convey a variety of emotions and appeal to, imagination, mystery and even luxury.

How about your business? Is purple the right fit to get the right response to your brand? I hope this post gets your imagination going and tune in next month when we will look at the color of aqua, in honor of March’s birthstone aquamarine!
